What to expect at your PAP Smear appointment?

An estimated 1,500 women in this country are diagnosed with cervical cancer in each year. About four hundred won’t survive it. A PAP test screens for cervical cancer. It is essential for early detection of precancerous or cancerous cells at the opening of the uterus.

While cervical cancer is most commonly the result of the sexually transmitted human papilloma virus (HPV), there can be non-viral causes. In addition, HPV can be dormant for years, even if you are in a monogamous relationship. For those reasons, beginning at age 21, all women should have regular screening.

The physicians at Silverado Medical Clinic will talk with you about how often to have a PAP test, depending on your:

  • Age
  • Sexual activity and lifestyle
  • Health status
  • Past history of PAP results

The procedure involves little or no discomfort. The doctor gently collects cells from the cervix. The specimen is then examined at a lab for abnormal cells.
