Dr. Rakesh Patel has been a practicing family physician for many years, and he holds a diploma in aviation medicine. In addition, for 12 years he served as a medical officer for the Royal Air Force in the UK.
What can I expect?
Most people are not perfectly fit and healthy. This can be a source of anxiety before an aviation medical examination. The three most important points to remember are:
- Full disclosure of existing health problems is essential
- The purpose of the exam is to protect public safety
- Most people pass the exam in time
What to expect during the visit?
Please bring the following to your appointment:
- Photo ID
- Wear your glasses (bring a copy of your eye prescription from your optometrist)
- Aviation Medical Certificates
Upon arrival, you will be required to provide a urine sample, so please make sure you are prepared for this. Please arrive ten minutes before your appointment time, for preliminary testing.
ECG – if required Dr. Rakesh Patel, can arrange this for you through Calgary Laboratory Services (approximate cost is $40). Please bring a copy of your last ECG if available.
Audiogram – if required, you can arrange this yourself at any audiology clinic, or Dr. Rakesh Patel can refer you to a clinic at your medical exam. Please bring a copy of your audiogram if available.
If this is your first or initial Aviation Medical, then once the required testing has been complete (including physical examination, ECG, and audiogram) your case will be sent to Transport Canada for subsequent approval and issue of license.
What are the conditions the exam tests for?
The exam tests for conditions which might impair your performance in flight, including such areas as:
- Ear, nose, and throat
- Vision
- Hearing
- Heart and lung function
- Blood pressure and pulse rate
- Diabetes
- Neurologic conditions
- Psychiatric status
